Facebook backtracks on plans to share phone number and address with apps

FacebookFollowing up on a previous post, Facebook announced late yesterday they will temporarily suspend plans to share users’ phone numbers and addresses with app developers posting the following quote in the developer blog.

Over the weekend, we got some useful feedback that we could make people more clearly aware of when they are granting access to this data. We agree, and we are making changes to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so. We’ll be working to launch these updates as soon as possible, and will be temporarily disabling this feature until those changes are ready. We look forward to re-enabling this improved feature in the next few weeks.

While the storing of addresses is not uncommon for internet merchant sites, Facebook’s implementation may be a bit too passive than most people are comfortable with. Phone numbers and addresses should be explicitly authorized by users with more than just a simple click of a mouse. Making it so easy opens this private information to abuse by unscrupulous app developers.

Facebook wants to share your phone number and address with third party applications

Palo Alto based Facebook announced on Friday in their developer blog that they are now making a user’s address and mobile phone number accessible as part of the User Graph object. In plain language, this means your phone number and address may be shared with third party apps if you so choose. Jeff Bowen wrote in the blog

Because this is sensitive information, we have created the new user_address and user_mobile_phone permissions. These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs.

Facebook app to share private info
Facebook's request to share your phone and address with apps

Many who use Facebook apps are familiar with the request for permission screen. A new entry has been added to allow the app to “access my private contact information”. Note that many web apps have no need for your address and phone number and will probably not ask for it. It is more likely to be used by merchant apps such as ebay marketplace where there would be a valid reason for passing on this information. Your address and phone number will not be shared with existing apps so you will not have to modify those.

In any case, users should pay attention to what private information they are sharing on Facebook as this new feature has the potential to be a telemarketer’s dream.

Model Mayhem suffers second security breach in nine months revealing private member information

Late in the afternoon of January 10th, 2011 members began reporting getting logged in as some other members giving them complete access to another members’ account including private emails. This is the second time this has happened in nine months. The first time was back in April 2010. During that incident, Model Mayhem refused to send out a site wide announcement alerting members to the security breach.

Late in the afternoon of January 10th, 2011 members began reporting getting logged in as other members giving them complete access to another members’ account including private emails. This is the second time this has happened in nine months. The first time was back in April 2010. During that incident, Model Mayhem refused to send out a site wide announcement alerting members to the security breach. They elected instead to send out limited emails to some members whom they suspected were affected. At the time, I pointed out that such limited notifications were inadequate. Model Mayhem’s email system, which does not allow permanent deletion of emails, shows both sides of the conversation so a single account breach exposes hundreds of other members’ email conversations if that one member had exchanged emails with hundreds of members. It is simply impossible to determine which accounts were compromised. Continue reading “Model Mayhem suffers second security breach in nine months revealing private member information”
