Model Mayhem recently introduced VIP badges which appears under the member’s avatar in the forum. But I noticed a few badges were missing so I made a few more for users who may have felt left out. Get your unofficial Model Mayhem badges [...] So many Model Mayhem members are well aware that the site has experienced downtime last week due to a distributed denial of service attack. Lots of paying VIP and premium members were up in arms about the downtime and screaming for some kind of remedy in the form of a credit or refund. Let me first say that I am not a paying member so I don’t really care what they do for the paying members. Even if I was a paying member, I couldn’t care less about a credit for the few hours of down time and the week of spotty performance. A monthly VIP membership is $10 so a week is just $2.50. You can’t even buy an average drink in Starbucks for that amount. But people want some kind of appeasement so Model Mayhem had to pacify [...] Model Mayhem is now on day three of outage. The first day was mostly slow performance and 504 gateway errors. The site has been completely offline the last 24 hours. So what lessons can be gleamed from this latest incident? No websites can be immune from outages. This latest outage appears to be a result of a denial of service attack against many Internet Brands websites hosted in El Segundo, CA. The first reports of problems were posted at 9 am November 12, 2009. The site continued to operate intermittently throughout the day. Many forum posts were started asking what was happening but there were no official word from Model Mayhem [...] It seems lots of Model Mayhem users are missing connections due to Model Mayhem being down. If you have a shoot scheduled or need to connect with someone, feel free to use the comment section to try and connect with someone. Be sure to post your correct email address and/or website where you can be contacted. Provide enough information to identify yourself and the person you are [...] On November 12 Model Mayhem, along with many other sites owned by Internet Brands, experiences sluggish performance. The problem seems to be with the network infrastructure used by Internet Brands as the performance problems are not limited to Model Mayhem. As of early morning November 13, most of the sites operated by Internet Brands are completely [...] A Model Mayhem member brought up an interesting concept the other day in this thread. He was inquiring about the benefits of building “bridges” between competing modeling/photography networking sites to facilitate such functions as contest, events, mentoring, etc. This brings up an interesting concept. Although that thread focused primarily on event driven functions, I want to expand the discussion to something much [...] I occasionally see modeling site forum posts from photographers who object to models using tiered rates for lingerie or nudes vs clothed shoots. Some refer to these as stripper rates as a means to disparage models who do this. The rationale given is that nude modeling requires no more effort than clothed modeling so it should be the same. Well a picture for a flyer cost no more to produced than the exact same picture used for a product label but most smart photographers will price the product shot much higher. Same effort, different [...] Well it’s becoming routine. www.ModelMayhem.com is down again for unknown reasons. The last time they went down for four days due to a bad code roll out. The purchase of the site by Internet Brands was suppose to improve things but I can’t recall the site going down as often or for as long a duration when it was owned by Tyler. Granted Internet Brands is new to the nuances of the site and probably don’t know about all the traps and pitfalls Tyler set in place when he threw the site together with shoestrings, smoke, and mirrors. But a huge Web site holding company with so many sites under their umbrella should have some kind of redundancy built in to reduce or minimize such catastrophic [...] Well here were are on volume #3. Time flies but these reveals are always fun. I don’t go looking for them. They always just reveal themselves by acting stupid to draw attention to themselves. Volume #1 and volume #2 proved that to be the case. This edition is pretty straight forward but is noteworthy because it involves a senior moderator on Model Mayhem, a popular modeling networking [...] Tarah B
