Testing is a modeling industry term used to describe various types of shoots. There are both paid and unpaid tests.

Photographer tests are done to try out new lighting, equipment, setup, or concepts. The model may or may not be paid or may be paid in images.

Agency tests are done when agencies send new models to test with photographers. These may involve the model or agency paying the photographer for the images.

Client tests are done when a client wants to try out a concept for an upcoming shoot.

Portfolio tests are done for the purpose of adding to a portfolio. They are usually organized by a photographer and the results of the test are images for each party’s portfolio.

In most test scenarios, no releases are involved and the resulting images are never used commercially.
