In the United States, a model release is a written document a model gives to a photographer which waives certain rights the model already holds without a release. A model's position is generally stronger without a model release. The purpose of a model release is to protect the photographer against future lawsuits a model might file for claims such as invasion of privacy or defamation. A model release does not protect the model. A model release does not address things such as payment or when a model should get images.
