For almost 30 years, over $41 million has been raised to help fight childhood illness, cancer and HIV/AIDS at Macy’s Glamorama, formerly known as Macy’s Passport. Join the Glam mob this year in San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre for the most spectacular fashion show, after party and philanthropic event of the year! The after party is at the Asian Art Museum a short walk from The Orpheum.

This year’s performer include:

Robin Thicke

In April 2011, Karmin’s Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan ignited the blogosphere when they posted a cover of Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” on YouTube. The clip instantly went viral, racking up millions of views after being tweeted by such hip-hop heavy hitters as The Roots’ Questlove, producers Diplo and Jermaine Dupree, and rapper The Game, each of whom marveled at the astonishing spectacle of Amy spitting raps at warp speed.

It was at a local fashion show back in 2004 where I first met San Francisco fashion designer Priya Saraswati of Saffron Rare Threads. She immediately impressed me with her vibrant firecracker of a personality. Fashion designers come and go in San Francisco. Some move on to other markets such as Los Angeles or New York while others just fade away. Saffron Rare Threads is among a small group of designers who have endured and even thrived in this very challenging market.

Saffron Rare Threads’ pieces are contemporary,  vibrant, and stylish offering a variety of selections and price points to fit a variety of women. Locally designed and manufactured, they have chosen to stay local despite the many challenges of doing business in San Francisco. Their first boutique was in the Mission district and they have since moved into their flagship store located at One Embarcadero Center taking over the old Coach store.

The name of their Fall/Winter 2011 collection is “Grit, Gloss & Glamor”. As Priya describes it, “it’s what it takes to last in the extremely competitive apparel design business”. 2011 marks 7 years of Saffron Rare Threads bringing its taste of sleek, modern womenswear to the Bay Area and beyond.

Come celebrate their 7th year anniversary on Thursday, October 20th at their store at One Embarcadero Center. The party is from 6-9 pm with a fashion show at 7:30 pm.

RSVP at [email protected] or via Facebook.

Macy’s Passport Glamorama show

The Macy’s Passport Glamorama show arrived in San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater last night, the last of its four stops including Minneapolis, Chicago, and Los Angeles. This year’s show underwent a transition from a traditional runway show at Fort Mason to a stage show featuring music from Macy Gray and Eric Hutchinson along with dancers and other performers.

The Passport Glamorama show has scaled back significantly from prior years but they did not skimp on production value. This year’s show featured an opening by designer Chris March from Project Runway season 4 along with 3D holographic effects set against a giant LED video wall. The featured designers were Tracy Reese who made a personal appearance, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, Material Girl, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, INC, Felina/Jezebel and 2(x)ist.

Although the show has been downsized, the goal of philanthropy has not changed. Nor has the needs of the charities they serve. This year’s beneficiaries were AIDS Emergency Fund, Glide Foundation, and Project Open Hand.

Patrons were treated to an after party at the Asian Art Museum with the usual goodies supplied by sponsoring vendors. A dance floor was setup upstairs surrounded by delicious sweets to amply satisfy any sweet tooth. In a move that is uniquely San Francisco, the desert tables were staffed by cross dressers. The party went on until midnight and by all indications, everyone enjoyed the reinvented Macy’s Passport show.
