San Francisco stumbled again with the latest attempt at throwing a fashion event

In the case of Eco-Fashion Show at the Bentley Reserve on November 18th organized by Yetunde Schuhmann, founder of SF Style, it was a little different. It was under hyped and under delivered.

Eco Fashion Show San Francisco. (c) Pat YuenTypically, fashion events in San Francisco are over hyped and under delivered. Promoters like to throw around phrases such as “first ever”, “premier”, “exclusive”, and “best” when describing their events at a bar or club. They don’t think twice about appointing themselves with some made up titles awarded to them by some made up organization that is nothing more than a web page and Facebook page.

In the case of Eco-Fashion Show at the Bentley Reserve on November 18th organized by Yetunde Schuhmann, founder of SF Style, it was a little different. It was under hyped and under delivered. Prior to the event, there was only a few mentions in obscure events listing referring viewers to buy tickets at $24 and $65 a pop. There was no website referenced and the entire search-able content consisted of time, place, and price. NEXT model Lacey James recounts her experience modeling in Macy’s Passport Glamorama show

I met and photographed the beautiful Lacey James several years ago at the annual 5 Designers & A Poodle charity fashion show to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Recently, I interviewed Lacey to get some insight on her experience as a runway model for Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama fashion show running in four cities including San Francisco.

Macy’s Passport show transitions to Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama

In a sign of the tough economic times, the annual Macy’s Passport fashion extravaganza is transitioning from a three night event at Fort Mason to a single evening event at The Orpheum Theatre.

In a sign of the tough economic times, the annual Macy’s Passport fashion extravaganza is transitioning from a three night event at Fort Mason to a single evening event at The Orpheum Theatre. This change should not comes as a surprise as tough economic times has hit the fashion and charity events sector just as it has affected most other sectors.

IMG, the primary organizer of LA Fashion Week pulled out of the Los Angeles market several years ago. Gen Art, who organized two annual fashion shows in San Francisco, closed its doors nationally earlier this year citing lost of major sponsorship. With the closure of Gen Art, San Francisco was left with Macy’s Passport as the single remaining major fashion event.

In July, Macy’s announced the downsizing and venue change saying

This year the annual Macy’s Passport fashion benefit will undergo a remarkable transformation, becoming Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama, and moving from its Fort Mason location to the Orpheum Theater in Downtown San Francisco.

Just as the face of AIDS is evolving, this event is also being reinvented and re-imagined, presenting the runway show as theater. The magic on the runway will be transformed and transported into the beautiful, landmark Orpheum Theater with an exciting after party at the Asian Art Museum.

Lacey James, who will model in all four shows, said this about her experience

“My experience being model in the Macy’s Passport/Glamorama shows this year has been an absolute wonder. Not only am I surrounded by amazing models, and everyone involved backstage, but to be able to be a part of these local charities, and meet these amazing children is a dream come true. The energy and heart of this show starts with them, and as a model we get to carry that out to the audience. It is an exhilarating and heartfelt experience, to say the least. Being a professional model for ten years, this show is by far one of the greatest jobs I have been a part of.”

In a small fashion market such as San Francisco, a downsized show is still better than a canceled show. In some ways, this may be a positive change for a show which had become overly produced and repetitive. It was becoming difficult to distinguish images of the show from one year to another.

Popular musical artist Macy Gray, who first soared to fame with her debut album “On How Life Is” and her massive hit single “I Try,” will headline Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama at The Orpheum Theater on Friday, September 24 at 8 p.m. Also, singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson will perform during this year’s show. Topping the list of designers this year: Tracy Reese, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, Material Girl, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Passport began as an awareness-raising fashion show in Macy’s employee cafeteria in 1982 and has since grown into one of the largest and longest-running HIV/AIDS events of its kind. The fashion benefit, with the help of the Macy’s Foundation, has donated more than $28 million for HIV/AIDS services, prevention and research. “We are proud to support the ongoing programs provided to the community by AIDS Emergency FundGlide Foundation and Project Open Hand,” said RB Harrison, President and Regional Director of Stores. “These organization have a daily impact on those living with HIV/AIDS; providing services, financial support, education, meals and shelter.”
